So for some strange reason, I went to Instyle.com today and started looking through their posts (this is a mag site and it's the first time that I've ever tried going to one of these). Personally, I blame Boyfriend. I've turned into suck a kikay freak ever since we got together... but I have to admit, being a Kikay Freak is uber fun!!!

Anyway, I found a relatively interesting article about how to have great-looking hair. The stuff they wrote actually made sense and it doesn't really require humungous amounts of money or energy, so I've decided to share it with you :) (this is me, being nice)

10 Ways to Sexy Hair

Number 1: Lots of Layers

There's a reason wind machines are a photoshoot staple: Hair that's tousled is more provocative than stiff, straight planks. So fake the breezy effects of a blower with swinging layers. If you have medium to thick hair, ask your stylist for choppy layers all the way around your lead (like Jennifer Aniston's). If you have fine strands, all it takes is a few chin-grazing pieces in front.

We bought a couple of installers for my Mac and I was able to find a copy of COREL. Before going into the call center industry, I was seriously thinking of pursuing a career in graphic design (which would explain why my interviewers initially thought of putting me in Adobe). Anyway, I haven't done any work in COREL for the past 4 or 5 years and the last program that I used was several versions older than the one I have now... not to mention that I used to work with a Windows-based computer.

Moving on... I've been spending some time playing around with COREL (trying to figure out the ins and outs) and came up with this...

Boyfriend and I went to Greenhills today (same as yesterday) to have one of the installers we bought exchanged. He tried installing it in my Mac last night and nearly had a stroke when it wouldn’t work. It was a pretty fast trip to the mall, mind you. We were done in less than an hour.

We had dinner in Luk Yuen (same as yesterday). For those who like Chinese food, this is an absolute must-try. We already have some favorites from the menu:

Boneless Chicken in Lemon Sauce - Boyfriend's choice, really. I like it because the chicken's fried well - the breading gives it a crunchy crust but the chicken is moist and tender inside. It's also cut into strips, which makes it easy to eat. The sauce is just the right mix of tasting tangy and sweet and, most importantly, is of great amount when served. (Php230.00, good for 2 to 3 persons)

Sweet and Sour Pork - Obviously, this is my influence. Just like the French Onion Soup, I must try the Sweet and Sour Pork in every Chinese restaurant that I find. Luk Yuen's S&SP falls on my top two - the sauce is thick and clings to the meat (and your plate!). The garnish makes for good presentation (I can't account much for the taste since I only ever eat the pineapples) and the meat is cooked thoroughly but remains tender to the bite. (Php220.00, good for 2 persons)

Hakaw - what is a meal in a Chinese restaurant without Hakaw? My father was the one who introduced me to Luk Yuen. Hakaw - steamed shrimp dumplings - has always been a dimsum that we order. It's got a translucent wrap around steamed shrimp. In Luk Yuen, the shrimp is steamed whole, so once you bite or slice into the wrap, you get to see the pinkish-orangey hue of the shrimp. And in all the years that I've eaten in this restaurant (and it's various branches), I have never encountered Hakaw with filling that wasn't fresh. (Php100, 4 pieces)

Pork Siomai - A staple, regardless if we're having lunch, merienda or dinner. Generally, dimsum are made in small portions since it is not meant to be a separate course in a meal. The really good thing about the pork siomai in Luk Yuen is that it's ginormous. Boyfriend likes it because it's chunky. (Php90.00, 4 pieces)

Spring Rolls - I find this to be one of the safest things that you can order in a restaurant. It hardly ever happens that it disappoints you or that it doesn't taste good. I like lumpia by nature, Boyfriend doesn't, so this is obviously one of my favorites. He bites of my plate from time to time, but I doubt if this will one of the things he'll order given the chance. The only thing I don't particularly like about the Spring Rolls is that it's too oily. I love the way the wrapper crumbles into pieces when you slice into it, but the oil is just everywhere. It isn't something you'd eat without rice - it kind of needs something else to absorb some of the oil that it secretes. Taste-wise, though, there is nothing wrong about this dish. (Php90.00, 3 pieces)

We were supposed to go to Gale to get my nails done, but it was almost 8:30 pm when we finished and neither or us was sure that the nail place would still be open. It was decided that we would just go home and get our home-serviced massages (yay!). In the FX, I got stuck in the middle part, with a really tall guy and two now-so-small ladies. Miraculously, I found myself able to breathe (which prompted me to text Boyfriend that I felt so small, being cramped and still being able to breathe normally and all). The position, however, pushed me closer to the two seemingly-gay guys sitting in the front seat. Somewhere near Ultra, I heard one of them say, "Paano mo sinasabi yan (referring to the subdivision near Ultra)? Valle Verde (pronounced "valye verde") or Villa Verde (pronounced "vilya verde"). I realized that it must have been awesome if someone had been filming my facial expressions then. And there was that little voice inside my head demanding... "Oh my gad... saan nya napulot ang letter I?".

See? That's something to ponder about. I guess you really do learn something new every day.

The Taxi Driver Who Wanted Tinapay

It was when he said this that I realized it was going to be a long, long, long ride. "Parang ngayon, ihahatid kita. Ang layo-layo. Kawawa naman ako." Before we go any further, let me make these very clear:

Number One: I don't like cabbies who strike up conversations during the ride. I want peace and quiet when I travel alone - regardless of whether I ride a cab or commute. If I wanted conversation, I would have travelled with someone. If I felt the horrible, horrible urge to speak to someone while I was traveling alone, I would use my phone to call up Boyfriend. Or Misty Shelly. Or Vheks. Or at least someone I knew.

Number Two: I cannot stand people who wallow in self-pity. Even myself, thus, making it safe to conclude that there are days that I cannot stand myself. Which is apt, really. If you were me, there would be days when you would hate you too.

Needless to say, what I hate the most is when cabbies with an abnormally strong urge to self-disclose chooses to do so and fails to realize when it rapidly turns into a soliloquy with a them of "Poor Me". When I murmur in response, it is not code for "I want to talk with you" or "Keep talking to me". It's my non-violent, passive-agressive way of telling people to shut the hell up.

Unfortunately, tonight, on my way home - at nearly 2 o'clock in the morning - that's EXACTLY what I got.

My cabbie was whiny, drove slowly and was slightly deaf. He asked me to repeat every single thing that I said. He also kept asking for the directions when I very clearly - and very audibly - said it less than 5 minutes ago. Maybe he whiny, drove slowly, slightly deaf and had a short-term memory gap. Or maybe it was a bi-product of being old - which still doesn't make it okay for him to be whiny or keep talking to me when I was clearly NOT responding.

The best line that I heard was this: "Dagdagan mo naman yung bayad mo, kahit pang tinapay lang."

Haller, it's two o'clock in the freaking morning. The only places that sell bread at that time are the 24-hour stores and Pan de Manila - all of which do not sell bread for less than 5 pesos. And yes, I know I'm taking this literally. It was just too good of a chance to pass up.

I ended up paying a hundred and five bucks for the ride. That's what the meter read, and that was what I paid. I was really glad to be home, even if I knew that the hundred and five bucks couldn't bring back the twenty minutes I had lost in the back of the cab.

I Watched the Watchmen (No, really, I did)

"The Watchmen" was already showing last Thursday, as we discovered while we were on our way to Greenhills. Boyfriend and I were able to catch the last full show at 9.10 pm with Vheks. Oh, and Mario (who will be formally introduced in another post).

2 hours and 45 minutes later, we came out of the theatre... a bit dazed, I think. For a graphic-novel-turned-film, it was more profound that what had been shown in the past, with a predominant theme of " for the greater good" (which made me think of the letters exchanged between Dumbledore and Grindelwald). For those who are looking for the usual feel-good ending, you might not find what you're looking for; but if you're the type who likes to analyze a plot to death, you'll probably like it.

The cinematography was excellent! The fight scene at the beginning was probably one of the best that I've seen. In a word, the movie was graphic. Bloody graphic. Gory graphic. So graphic that I had to turn my head away a couple of times to squeal into Mario's head. But I think that was what the film was about. It was about human nature at its coarsest and the many, many reasons why we sometimes consciously choose for it to be so.

I liked the movie. Seriously. I didn't know who the Watchmen were prior to the showing (if fact, I went online when we got home and looked them up). I tried reading the graphic novel and couldn't get past page 3 (the graphics just weren't doing it for me). Boyfriend was probably a million times more excited than I was. I was just happy that we were going to get to see it on my birthday. I didn't expect an intellectually-stimulating experience. Boyfriend and I agreed on one thing... "The Watchmen" isn't one of those movies that you can watch without thinking.

There were some things in the plot that you could see right through and some things that you wouldn't think would happen (Boyfriend wouldn't allow me to put spoilers in the post). Personally, it was a plus for me to not have read on the story before watching the film. The jolts of surprise I had over the things that I did not see coming were priceless.

Things to watch out for:

1. Jeffrey Dean Morgan

2. Nite Owl's fluffy hair (when he's not in costume)

3. Dr. Manhattan's blue... you'll figure it out

4. That villain with the wicked ears

I've got a list of movies that I need to watch in a theatre (in my world, there are films that I can watch when it's been finally been released in a DVD and there are films that I HAVE to watch in a movie house):

1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine - showing on May 1

There's also supposed to be one on Magneto. THAT's something that I will also definitely watch out for. Supervillains trump superheroes any day!

2. Star Trek - showing on May 9

I just saw the trailer last Thursday while waiting of the "The Watchmen" to begin. It's got a Star Wars feel to it, which is really different from how it's always been. Can you tell that I'm a Trekkie?

3. Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen - showing on June 26

Again, I just saw the trailer earlier this week and it seems interesting. I'd watch it just for Shia LaBeouf, though.

4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - showing on July 17

It's a Harry Potter movie. I'm a Harry Potter fan... so much so that I've "corrupted" my boyfriend and he has switched over to our side. I've been reliving my love for Harry Potter as of late. In the absence of my books (which are scattered around the many, many places of my past), Boyfriend and I have been watching the Harry Potter films. In sequence. We're scheduled to watch The Goblet of Fire next.

5. GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra - showing August 7

Sunday, Jan 18, I decided to try something new.

I know that I'd be really bad at it, seeing that I've never tried to do it before... nor have I ever felt the need to. When I was 23, it was different. There was no choice at that point... it was the only way that I could ever have moved on.

This time it was voluntary. I made a conscious choice... and I know that it'll hurt and I know that it'll be hard and, at this point, I can only hope that I could live through it.

Have you ever had that unexplainably, strange feeling in the pit of your tummy, or deep in your heart, that there's something off with what's happening?

I do. In fact, I have it right now.

I want to shake off the feeling, but it doesn't go away... and it's really getting in the way of my whole "trying-to-understand" thing. Brian says she's just a kid and it all started out as a joke... but her name appears on his phone more often than those he claims to be closest to in his class. I found an empty SMS in his drafts folder last night, and that feeling, it just settled at the pit of my stomach. He says he wasn't going to send her anything, that it might have been one of his other friends who asked to borrow his phone yesterday after work.

I believe him. I know he loves me. I know that he's friendly. But her... there's something different about her. She sent a message again this morning, just when Brian was about to leave for work. I found it. Now I feel like there's a knife stuck in my chest.

I'm afraid and I'm hurting but I don't know why. And deep, deep, deep down inside, there's a little pot of anger that's starting to bubble up.

I'm hardly ever wrong about things like these. Somehow I keep wishing that I wouldn't be right with this one.

There's Something New Every Day

When the clock struck twelve to welcome the new year, I was in the office. But what else is new, right?

We recently completed a series of simulation calls for the most recent class of one of the tech lines. As always, it was an "interesting" experience (if by "interesting" one means getting to the point where blood slowly drips from the many orifices on one's head). One thing that I can always count on during these moments are uber-funny instances that we have the tendency to relive over and over and over and over again. December 30th, 31st and January 2nd were no exceptions.

Here are some of the things that I picked up during these three "interesting" days:

Hom. n. The main screen of the equipment that shows the date and amount. (i.e. "Please press the back button until go get to the hom screen.")
Frefix. n. A number that needs to be dialed to get an outside line.
Slowler. adj. A pace that is not so fast. (i.e. "Can you speak a little bit slowler, please?")

Along with these came some phrases...

A head up. def. To give fair warning (i.e. "I just want to give you a head up")
Phone by Phone. def. A service provided by the account wherein parts of equipment are replaced in the event that the concern is not resolved over the phone (i.e. "We cannot send out a technician because we are phone by phone.")

O diba, super funny?

And, of course, while having lunch, we started sharing our own experiences with such "interesting" statements...
